Prices are estimates

The costs shown on price-ref are estimates, not quotes or offers. We work them out from the prices retailers publish to the Australian Energy Regulator's Energy Made Easy service and the usage you give us. What you actually pay depends on how much electricity you use and when, your meter and network tariff, price changes, and the retailer's terms. Your bills may be higher or lower than our estimates.

Before you switch, read the retailer's Basic Plan Information Document (or Energy Fact Sheet in Victoria) and confirm the price, contract terms, fees and eligibility with the retailer.

What we compare

We currently compare residential electricity plans with a single-rate (flat) usage price. We don't yet compare time-of-use, controlled load, demand or gas plans, or business plans, so a plan that suits you may not be listed. By default we show each retailer's cheapest plan for your usage. Plans only for seniors are shown when you tick "Are you a senior?". Plans a retailer sells only through a comparison site, broker or moving-house connection service (for example One Big Switch, iSelect or Compare the Market), or only to a bank's customers or members of a paid club (for example CommBank Yello, Westpac, RACV or Kogan FIRST), aren't shown, because you can't get them directly from the retailer. Plans that need a loyalty membership anyone can join (for example Qantas Frequent Flyer, Everyday Rewards, My NRMA, Velocity or BP Rewards) are shown with a tag naming the membership. We work this out from each plan's name and eligibility rules, so check the retailer's eligibility conditions before you switch. Plans we can't estimate are listed separately with the reason.

Per year includes GST, any recurring membership fee and guaranteed discounts (ones the retailer applies without conditions), but not discounts that depend on conditions such as paying on time. The supply and usage rates shown are the retailer's published rates, before discounts. First year also takes off sign-up, welcome and yearly credits shown in the plan's details, which usually have conditions (for example staying with the retailer for a set time). Plans are ranked on the first-year price.

Where the data comes from

Plan and price data comes from Energy Made Easy, run by the Australian Energy Regulator, through the Consumer Data Right, and is updated daily. Usage benchmarks also come from Energy Made Easy. price-ref is independent and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the Australian Energy Regulator, the Australian Government or any retailer. Retailers can change their prices at any time, and data errors are possible.

We're independent

We don't receive commissions, referral fees or payments from retailers, and the ranking isn't influenced by any retailer. "Visit" links go to the retailer's own website and aren't paid links.

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law that can't lawfully be excluded. To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for loss arising from your use of, or reliance on, estimates on this site.
